Northwestern Building, Historic Restoration
In 1999 USRI was selected to complete work on The Northwestern Building in Minneapolis MN, the building was built in 1910.
- Installing new galvanized shelf angle
- Removing 100% of existing brick by pneumatic grinder and diamond blade
- Every brick was salvaged and numbered
- When flashing repairs were completed, salvaged brick was installed by
utilizing mortar mix based on original construction, color, and profiles - Various tuck-pointing was also completed throughout the building
The key to our success in regards to the mortar mix was to ascertain the sand used for the original construction. After numerous attempts to match the previous mix, we searched the proximity of the project and located river sand by the Mississippi River. This was an exact match.
